Political Debate

Political debates have certain characteristics that distinguish them from other types of debates. A political debate can be considered boring, or exciting and informative. Some political debates turn into fights while others remain relatively peaceful. Every political election will involve a political debate of some kind. The best known political debates are the ones that take place leading up to each presidential election. However, many other political debates happen over the course of a year. There are two main types of official political debates.

•One type of political debates is when candidates in an election debate each other on current issues. Political debates will mention everything from the economy to issues surrounding war. Sometimes a political debate can determine the outcome of who eventually win the election. The point of political debates involving candidates is so they can talk about their own policies and thoughts while questioning the views of their opponent. Political debates, especially those involving presidential candidates receive an enormous amount of media coverage. Statements made during a presidential political debate will be dissected by political analysts and political scientists, as well as the public. The presidential candidates are not the only ones who engage in well known political debate. Almost any person running for a government office will be required to go head to head with their opponent in a public political debate in order to show the people what their stance on various issues will be.

•Political debates involving candidates for office are important for a number of reasons. Since the media coverage they get is overwhelming, voters can have a chance to see what each candidate thinks about important issues. This gives the voters a better understanding of each candidate, making them more equipped to vote for the candidate they agree with. In the official presidential political debate, an individual that acts almost as a referee directs the line of questioning. Each major issue is brought to the table. Even though the political debates involving candidates may be more exciting, the legislative political debates are also very important, if not more so. It is these smaller political debates that determine public policies and laws.

•The other type of political debate is a legislative debate. A legislative debate does not get nearly as much coverage as a political debate that involves candidates. Legislative political debates bring lawmakers together to discuss whether or not a proposed bill or legislation should be passed. This type of political debate gives members of the group a chance to give personal opinions about the proposed legislation. One example of a group of lawmakers is Congress. A typical political debate involving Congress members would involve those for a bill trying to convince those against a bill to change their minds. Political debates of this nature are very common. They are important because they allow individual members to speak up in favor of or against something.

No matter what type of election, a political debate will likely accompany it. Political debates are a good way to see what a candidate’s stance on particular political issues is.
